You will be on course to become a qualified electrician with a variety of skills and knowledge, making you a much sought-after and increasingly employable person for an ever-growing industry. You will attend Telford College one day a week (in our own purpose built electrical installations workshop and modern classrooms) during term time to gain practical and theory knowledge and experience, covering specialist subject areas such as health and safety legislation, environmental legislation, practices and procedures, scientific principles, inspection and testing, fault finding and diagnosis, and design and installation. You will also complete a portfolio of evidence and your assessor will visit you and your work mentor on site.
You will work to complete the following units during the apprenticeship.
• Understand and apply health, safety and environmental considerations
• Electrical scientific principles and technologies
• Understand design and installation practices and procedures
• Understand how to plan, organise and oversee electrical work activities
• Understand and carry out terminations and connections of conductors
• Understand and carry out inspection, testing and commissioning of electrical systems
• Fault diagnosis and rectification.
• Understand the requirements for electrical installations BS7671:2018
• Apply health, safety and environmental considerations
• Organise and oversee the electrical work environment.
• Terminate and connect conductors
• Inspect, test and commission electrical systems
• Apply design and installation practices and procedures
• Apply fault diagnosis and rectification
You will take an AM2S assessment which will assess the skills you have learned along the way, from which will be graded either Pass, Merit or Distinction.
When the apprenticeship standard, knowledge requirements, portfolio, and off the job learning hours has been completed apprentices move to gateway. This is where the employer confirms competency and a project is set for the apprentice to complete ready for end point assessment.
A project report is created by the apprentices and submitted to the EPA for grading. Following the submission a discussion takes place to confirm competency and is graded. The apprenticeship is graded fail, pass or distinction with a transparent criteria to meet.
Many apprentices remain employed with the company and can move on to becoming the ‘Qualified supervisor’. Following the successful completion of this apprenticeship you can work as a qualified electrician for an electrical contractor, or you may want to look into becoming self-employed and being your own boss. You can apply for registration with various governing bodies or competent person schemes.
• You will need GCSEs Grade 8-4 (A-C) which must include English Language and Maths, or Level 2 Functional Skills equivalent.
Apprentices attend college for 1 day per week (term time) and go to work as an apprentice electrician four days per week. Apprentices will complete a portfolio of evidence alongside your training.
